How drum extraction works

Drums sit in a wide frequency range that overlaps heavily with bass, guitar and vocals, so a simple EQ filter can't isolate them cleanly. SplitVocals uses a Demucs v4 AI model trained to recognize the drum kit as a distinct source within the full mix and separate it from vocals, bass and everything else, keeping the kick, snare, hats and cymbals together as one stem.

As with every tool on this site, the model and your audio file stay on your device — the drum stem is produced locally, with nothing uploaded to a server.

Drummers isolate the drum track from a reference recording to study fills, groove and dynamics part by part. Producers pull drum stems from a track to sample a break or build a remix around an existing groove. Getting a clean drum stem

Extraction works best on mixes where the kit is recorded and mixed distinctly, which is true of most modern studio productions. Dense arrangements with heavy percussion layering, or live recordings where the drum mics also picked up other instruments, can leave a bit of bleed in the stem. A higher-quality source file (WAV or FLAC over a low-bitrate MP3) generally gives the model more to work with.
